The second issue of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness’ “Nova” was just as entertaining, if not more, than issue one! Nova is a character Marvel has tried to bring more exposure to over the last couple years, featuring him in the publisher’s first Infinite Comic, and also the 2012 event series “Avengers vs X-Men”. The most interesting thing about Nova’s recent high profile appearances is the fact that the man wearing the helmet isn’t Richard Rider, but a new character; Sam Alexander a teenager from Carefree, Arizona.
In this issue Alexander meets Guardians of the Galaxy member’s Gamora and Rocket Raccoon. Unbeknownst to Sam, he unintentionally insults Rocket, which leads to the classic hero’s misunderstanding before a team up.
Nova is Loeb and Mc Guinness at their best. The comic is cinematic in look, and epic in scale. The main characters of the story are clearly defined and developed. The book’s action scenes explode off the pages, due to the careful mastery of the creators involved. There isn’t a more heartfelt or action packed issue on the stands.
The comic ends with a cliffhanger (and guest appearance) that’ll have readers counting the days till issue 3…
