Review: Age of Ultron # 1

After years of teasing, the Age of Ultron is finally here! “Age of Ultron” is a 10-issue crossover event published by Marvel Comics, written by Brian Michael Bendis, which involves the return of Ultron and his conquest of the Earth.

The first issue is a bit confusing. New York has already been decimated, and Ultron is already in control. The reader has no idea if this story is happening now, in the future, or on an alternate Earth.

This is not to say that the comic isn’t entertaining, as always Bendis excels at presenting a clear point to the story and creative character dynamics.
Bendis breaks out all his favorite characters for this comic. The book focuses on Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Luke Cage, and She-Hulk.

It’s just without the back story; this issue leaves the reader with more questions than answers, such as:
“How did Ultron take over the Earth?’’
“Is that Otto or Peter?”
“What’s up with Cap?’’
“Is that new Stark Armor?”
“Did She-Hulk get a haircut?”

Bryan Hitch is the artist on issue 1, and as always he does not disappoint. One of the things that makes Hitch such a great artist is his usage of angles and perspectives when drawing a book’s panels, which usually results in some of the best cinematic pages in modern comics.

“Age of Ultron” is no different. Hitch’s artwork shows the reader the vast scope of destruction Ultron has wrought on this world.

The print version of the comic has a metallic foil cover; sure it’s a leftover gimmick from the 90’s, but it really helps the book stand out amongst the week’s new comics.

Overall the comic was a good read, but a little more backstory is needed. Hopefully issue 2 will provide that. Luckily it comes out next week!
