Yesterday, on February 6, 2013 the third issue of “Superior Spider-Man” by Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman was released.
This has been the most controversial of the Marvel Now! titles, due to the wild premise of Doctor Octopus’ mind inside Peter Parker’s body. Ever since Doctor Octopus “killed” Peter Parker and inherited his body in the “Amazing Spider-Man # 700”, Fanboys have been crying blasphemy all over the interwebs. “Otto Parker” is on a mission to prove that he is the Superior Spider-Man not only to himself, but to New York, and readers alike. In the “Superior Spider-Man # 1” the reader learns that Peter Parker is not totally dead. He is living on in a ghost form, acting as Otto Parker’s conscious.
Issue # 3 of the “Superior Spider-Man” focuses on Otto Parker’s relationships with Spider-Man’s foes, specifically the mayor of New York City; J. Jonah Jameson, and Adrian Toomes a.k.a. the Vulture. The issue begins with Jameson using his Bat-singal… I mean Spider-singal to summon Spider-Man to help the NYPD on a case, during which Otto Parker has some interesting encounters with Carlie Cooper (Peter’s Ex). Otto has as little tolerance of Jameson’s character as Peter did, but Otto uses flattery to impress Jameson enough to give Spider-Man access to the NYPD’s information network. This is a tactic Peter should try more often. The second half of the issue deals with Otto’s relationship with the Vulture. During the battle between Spider-Man and the Vulture, Otto offers the Vulture something that he’s always wanted. The Vulture untrusting of Spider-Man naturally refuses leading to an emotional battle between the two.
The most interesting parts of this issue are the memory sequences that focus on Doctor Octopus’ past, giving the reader a bit more insight as to why Otto is the way he is, making his perspective a little more sympathetic to the reader.
